Are you an author? Learn about Author Central 4/5(1). Tony Greig is one of most colourful figures in English cricket history. As a player he stirred up drama and excitement whenever he stepped on the field and as national team captain he was accused of ‘betrayal’ after taking a leading role in the formation of Kerry Packer’s World Series Cricket/5(15). Tony Greig was a fearless cricketer, a born entertainer, a stalwart friend and a loving son and father. His death in December was met with an outpouring of grief from family, friends, colleagues and fans. In this wonderful memoir, Tony's life is recounted by two of those who knew him best - his mother, Joycie, and his eldest son, Mark/5.   To underline the intensely personal nature of the book it begins with a preface by younger brother and fellow England international Ian, and ends with the text of the Spirit of Cricket lecture that Greig gave in , followed by a selection of tributes from others.

The reasons for the weight of expectation? There are a combination of factors. First of all Tony Greig’s emergence as one of the dominant personalities of the English game coincided with my early days as a cricket tragic – he is a fascinating character well worthy of a full biography.   T he Central Recreation Ground, Hastings was where I first saw Tony Greig.I'd heard a lot about him. My cricket chum's excited description of his debut innings in county cricket earlier in the season - with 15 fours and two sixes, including one off Brian Statham, over extra cover - had filled me with wide-eyed awe. But Sussex versus Kent in the County Championship was my first sighting. Tony Greig offers a compelling portrait of a fascinating cricketing era - and was shortlisted for Best Cricket Book at the British Sports Book Awards/5(17).
